Farmers Insurance Open 2014: Gary Woodland grabs 54-hole lead

Woodland takes a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round in La Jolla. The 29-year-old is looking for his third career PGA Tour victory.

Todd Warshaw

Gary Woodland shot a 2-under 70 on Saturday to capture the lead after three rounds at the 2014 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines South. Woodland holds a one-shot lead over Marc Leishman and second-round leader Jordan Spieth.

The story of the day in La Jolla was Tiger Woods shooting a 79 and missing the secondary cut, necessary after more than 78 players made the 36-hole cut. He finished tied for 80th place, one shot from the bottom at Torrey Pines, a course on which he has won seven tournaments.

Woodland had no such trouble, carding five birdies and a bogey in his first 17 holes. A double bogey on No. 18 put a damper on his round, but he was still just one of 18 players under par on Saturday.

Spieth entered the third round with a one-shot lead, but he was all over the place on Saturday; his round of 75 included four bogeys, a double bogey and only three birdies. Pat Perez and Morgan Hoffmann both shot an even-par 72 on Saturday and are tied for fourth place at 6-under, two shots back of Woodland.

Low round of the day on Saturday belonged to Andres Romero, who shot a 67. He stands at 5-under for the tournament, tied for sixth place and just three shots back heading into the final round.
