The opening event to the 2014 PGA Tour calendar season continues on Saturday with the second round from Kapalua’s Plantation Course starting bright and early on Maui. The Hyundai Tournament of Champions extends invitations only to those players who won sanctioned PGA Tour events last year, so the limited field of 30 players allows the Tour a lot of flexibility to shuffle the tee times around and accommodate the best television audience. There’s also the Monday finish to avoid going head-to-head with the NFL playoffs, although there is a bit of potential trouble on Monday with the BCS title game running up against the finish of the tournament.
2014 Hyundai Tournament of Champions: Tee times, pairings for Saturday’s round
The PGA Tour will send the field off three hours earlier than they did for the first round, shuffling the tee times around to avoid competing against the NFL and re-arranging the limited field immediately in the second round of the season.

With just those 30 guys in the field, the Tour also resets the tee times right off the bat, sending the lowest scores out in the final groups of the second round. There are currently four players tied atop the board at 7-under, including the 20-year old phenom Jordan Spieth. Kapalua, while unorthodox and challenging because of the sloping terrain and unpredictable winds, still yields a ton of birdies and the winner here is typically clear of 20-under after 72 holes. That’s the pace that was set on Friday, with the closing stretch of the Coore/Crenshaw course surrendering buckets of red numbers. Those four leaders will be out just before 3 p.m. in the eastern U.S. on Saturday.
The field will start a good three hours earlier than they did on Friday for the second round, with play predicted to wrap up around 7 p.m. ET and sneak in before the second NFL Wild Card game. Thankfully, there have been none of the ridiculous weather conditions and high winds that derailed this event last year.
