The first event of the 2014 PGA Tour season will wrap up Monday night and serve as an appetizer before kickoff in the national title game between Florida State and Auburn. The PGA Tour dances around (or gets clobbered by) the NFL postseason schedule for much of the first month of the season, but they’ve made a tradition out of having this first event from Kapalua finish on a Monday to try and avoid that Wild Card weekend. Of course, that means running up against college football’s final game but the schedule calls for a conclusion right around 8 p.m., well before the start in Pasadena.

Last year’s schedule was a disaster, thanks to persistent high wind that made conditions unplayable all weekend on the Maui mountainside. The tournament was cut down to 54 holes, all played on Monday and Tuesday running into the week of the Sony Open over on Oahu. But everything has gone according to plan in 2014, and a stacked leaderboard featuring Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, and Webb Simpson should serve as a nice little warm-up before the football. Even if there’s no Tiger or Phil, tuning in for the scenic vista is usually worth it alone during the desolate month of January.
Golf Channel will continue their coverage from the Plantation Course, coming on the air at 4 p.m. ET and taking the reins until the finish around 8 p.m. Because they’re all under the same Comcast umbrella, a little Johnny Miller has been sprinkled in with Rich Lerner and Frank Nobilo during the week on Maui.
