Peter Uihlein gets lucky clank off the flagstick for eagle

A rare and weird bounce off the stick results in one of a series of eagles at the third hole of the Honda Classic.

Stuart Franklin

The third hole at PGA National, host of this week’s Honda Classic, is one of the easier holes on the entire course. It’s a gettable par-5, where almost the entire field attacks and tries to get home in two. The front left pin location on Thursday is open to approach shots coming into the green from golfers playing lift-clean-place in the fairway, but there’s also a bunker right there swallowing plenty of shots. That bunker grabbed the shots of players such as Tiger Woods and Peter Uihlein in the first round. Woods got up-and-down from the sand to make birdie, while Uihlein, he took a different, and luckier path.

We last saw Uihlein with his wedges showboating with Rickie Fowler and dropping lob shots over a 25-foot net from two paces away. The son of Acushnet (Titleist) CEO wielded wedge this time and lofted his ball out of the trap and it immediately tracked the flagstick. It’s just that the ball was rolling a little too hot as it approached the cup. That’s when Uihlein got a fortunate bounce, as it smacked off the stick, and then some English rolled it back to the hole. It was a bizarre bounce and outcome:

That was one of the bright spots, however, in a rollercoaster round for Uihlein, who finished 3-over and tweeted his displeasure after the round:

Keep your head up, at least you got that generous bounce for eagle.
