Valspar Championship 2014: Robert Garrigus still leads, Kevin Na closes in

Robert Garrigus held on to his second-round lead, but saw his cushion cut to just a single stroke.

Robert Garrigus was unable to make it three straight rounds in the 60s at the Valspar Championship, but his 1-under round of 70 was just good enough to keep him in the lead. Garrigus sits at 8-under through 54 holes, one stroke ahead of Kevin Na.

Garrigus got off to a terrific start, opening the round with back-to-back birdies. He moved to 10-under overall with a birdie at No. 5, but that proved to be his final birdie of the round. He parred both par-5s on the back side after recording a birdie on his first 10 par-5s of the tournament. He also missed a pair of short par putts, including one on No. 18. His three-stroke lead to start the day was cut to a single stroke, with the rest of the field catching up as well. He’ll have plenty on the line on Sunday as a win would punch his ticket to the Masters.

Na may have something to say about that. He shot a 3-under 68 to cut into the lead. Na finished with four birdies, a bogey and 13 pars on the day. The most impressive of those birdies came on No. 15 when he chipped in. He wasn’t the only one making a run up the leaderboard, as absolutely ideal weather conditions led to some lower scores. John Senden shot up the leaderboard with a 7-under 64, and he’s now in third place at 6-under. Justin Rose is three strokes off the lead after shooting a 69, while Retief Goosen went from the cut line to a tie for fifth place at 4-under thanks to a round of 64.

Ten players will begin the final round within five strokes of the lead. If the final round is anything like the third round was, Garrigus may need a better round than 1-under to remain on top. Here is a full look at the leaderboard through 54 holes.
