The opening event of the annual Florida swing concludes on Sunday, with Rory McIlroy going for his second Honda Classic title in the last three years. A win on Sunday for Rory would be a huge boost following the poor play and ignominy of last year’s Honda, and put the rest of the golf world on notice just over a month before we head to the Masters.

The best field of the year wraps things up on Sunday in Palm Beach, and it’s a final round with the most comprehensive coverage of the season so far.

McIlroy is going for the wire-to-wire win on Sunday and he starts with a two-shot lead over Russell Henley. The Ulsterman has been close to flawless all week, firing three rounds in the 60s and cruising in all facets of the game from tee to the bottom of the cup. Saturday’s round was his most difficult test of the week, and yet he still extended his margin to 12-under. It should have been more, but McIlroy repeatedly burned the edge on multiple birdie putts coming into the clubhouse, including two birdie misses by less than an inch on the last two holes.
With the Tour back in the eastern time zone for the first time this year and the days getting longer, the final pairing of McIlroy and Henley will not go out until 1:40 p.m. ET. Their entire round will fall within the broadcast windows on Golf Channel and NBC. This is the first week with coverage back on NBC, the transition from CBS occurring as the Tour’s west coast swing ends and March Madness takes over for Jim Nantz and friends. With NBC and Golf Channel falling under the same Comcast parent, the coverage is enhanced a bit on the weekends and with so many big names in the field this week, there will be live golf on both channels for much of the afternoon.
Golf Channel will come on the air with their pregame show starting at 11 a.m. ET, so there will be live look-ins and highlights for anyone meaningful or anything worthwhile happening before the leaders get out on the course. They will then go live at 1 p.m. and make the usual switch to network and NBC at 3 p.m. But GC will stay on the air for their first run of “spotlight coverage” this year (more on that here), televising the Bear Trap holes from 15 through 17 with the screen peppered by stats while NBC runs the typical Sunday coverage concurrently.
The regular NBC and GC coverage will be streamed as a simulcast via their LiveExtra service. With Rory going out just before 2 p.m., and world No. 1 Tiger Woods teeing off at 12:23 p.m., Golf Channel and NBC should be busy showing the biggest stars in the game from the first tee ball until the conclusion of the event just before 6 p.m. ET.
