Honda Classic 2014 payout: Rory McIlroy on verge of another $1 million check

One year after walking off the course in shame and disarray, Rory McIlroy is closing in on his second million-dollar winner’s check in the past three seasons at the Honda Classic.

While it may not boast the deep purse enjoyed by most events involving seven of the world’s top nine players, the Honda Classic still pays out seven figures to the winner. Right now, that looks to be Rory McIlroy, who maintains his multi-shot lead on Sunday and is going for just the second ever wire-to-wire win at this event.

Another win would earn Rory $1,080,000 for his seventh victory on the American Tour and push his career total on the Tour towards the $30 million mark. McIlroy obviously rakes in tons of cash from endorsements, particularly from Nike, with whom he signed a deal reportedly north of $200 million at the start of last season. A win would increase his career earnings to $28,068,130.

The $1.08 million is 18 percent of the total $6 million purse, which is $300,000 more than when Rory won at PGA National two years ago. In 2012, McIlroy took home $1.026 million for the win at Palm Beach. This year, he’d cash $44,000 more and not even have to take a private jet home, as the Ulsterman has since set up his home base in the South Florida area just a short drive from PGA National.

The top chasers of McIlroy right now are Russell Knox and Ryan Palmer. The winner gets the only $1M check, but second place will earn $648,000 and third will cash $408,000 (barring no ties).

UPDATE: That multi-shot lead for McIlroy evaporated quickly down the stretch, and Russell Henley, his playing partner, emerged from a four-man playoff to earn the $1M winner’s check (full recap of the day here). The full payout totals for those who made it to the weekend (not including Tiger Woods, who forfeited his winnings when he withdrew Sunday afternoon):
