2014 Valero Texas Open: Steven Bowditch leads by a stroke

A holed-out eagle helped Steven Bowditch take the 36-hole lead at the Texas Open.

Despite wrapping up his round with a double-bogey on his 18th hole, Steven Bowditch’s 5-under 67 was good enough to put him in the lead through two rounds at the Valero Texas Open.

Bowditch, who opened the tournament ranked No. 155 in the FedExCup standings, got the round off to a good start. He birdied his second hole of the day, then followed that up with an eagle on his third hole of the day. Following a solid drive, he holed a wedge from 83-yards for the eagle. He finished his first nine in style, with back-to-back birdies before the turn. He went on to drop as low as 7-under for the round before giving two strokes back on his final hole. Even with the rough final hole, Bowditch moved to 8-under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Chad Collins and Andrew Loupe.

Collins shot 30 spots up the leaderboard thanks to a 6-under round of 66. Loupe led after the first day, but dropped into a tie for second place with a 2-under 70. Cameron Beckman and Pat Perez sit at 5-under, rounding out the top five.

Phil Mickelson looked like he may not be long for the event after opening the tournament with a 5-over 77, but he rebounded on Friday. Mickelson carded a 2-under 70 in the second round, just sneaking on the right side of the cut line at 3-under. While Bowditch and others are playing for a spot in the Masters, Mickelson is attempting to get his game in order before heading to Augusta National. Friday was at least a solid step in that direction.

Like Mickelson, Billy Horschel also rebounded from a disastrous first round. He shot a 71 on Friday, nine strokes better than the 80 he shot to open the tournament. Despite the improvement, he was still 7-over and missed the cut. Here is a complete look at the leaderboard through two rounds.
