Just an hour before he teed off, I did my best to assess Tiger’s chances on Sunday and his most likely route to a fifth career win at Doral. That blueprint included a birdie at the opening hole, a gettable par-5 that Tiger posted a red number on in his Saturday round of 66.

A fan plunked in the top of the head, another smacked with a second drive, and a ball in the water were probably not the way Tiger Woods wanted to start his day at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

Well, things didn’t exactly start smoothly for Tiger, as he lost his first ball of the day out to the right and dropped it directly on top of the head of an unsuspecting fan.
Woods would have to lay up from there, taking out his chance at eagle and limiting a shot at birdie. He finished with a disappointing par, while the two guys ahead of him on the leaderboard but playing one group back both picked up a birdie, adding to the deficit.
After a par on No. 2, things went off track for the world No. 1 again at the third hole when he pulled his drive off to the left and plunked another fan. Tiger caught a break, however, and the ball caromed back into the fairway. He did not, however, take advantage of the bounce and promptly put his second shot in the middle of the water.
After the shot, Tiger was seen wincing in a bit of discomfort. He went on to “save” bogey but it’s another ugly start for Woods.
It was on the third hole last week that he hit his ball in the water as well, the first sign that something was off and he withdrew due to back spasms a couple hours later. Are we headed for the same result this Sunday?
Update: It got not better for Woods on the fourth hole, where he put his tee shot in a greenside bunker and could not get up-and-down to save par. He’s 2-over for the day and quickly falling out of contention.
