The World Golf Championships feature exclusive limited no-cut fields, where every player who enters is guaranteed to take home at least $45,000. The WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral is one that always draws the biggest names, much like Firestone later in Augusta.
WGC Cadillac Championship 2014 payout: Patrick Reed closing in on winner’s check from huge $9 million purse
The winner’s check at Doral is among the biggest of the PGA Tour season, and Patrick Reed is just a few holes away from a career payday.

Unlike the WGC Match Play two weeks ago, Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, and Phil Mickelson were all in attendance this week to earn some big world ranking points and cash a piece of the $9 million purse. That total is larger than any tournament all season, except for two -- the Players Championship and PGA Championship, which just this year made the move to $9.5 million and $10 million purses, respectively.
So it pays (more than the Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open) to win a WGC event and right now it’s looking like Patrick Reed is set to cash the largest check of his career. The winner is set to earn $1.53 million of the total pot, which is almost half of Reed’s total career PGA Tour winnings. It’s yet another startling amount to hammer home just how far the purses have ballooned on Tour.
First-place money when Billy Casper won at Doral 50 years ago: $7,500.
— Mike O'Malley (@GD_MikeO) March 9, 2014 Reed has currently banked $3,768,232 in a career that’s taken off over the last nine months. While this would be the signature win of his career, it would be his third since taking the Wyndham last August in Greensboro. That tournament paid out $954K to the winner and Reed backed that up with his first ever $1M payday in January at the Humana Challenge. So this would be Reed’s third huge payday in less than a year, and possibly lock up a spot on the American Ryder Cup team in the fall.
The second place finisher takes home $900K, and third place cashes just over $600k (barring no ties). It’s as big money as an event gets, and Reed is just a few holes away from earning $1.53 million a month before his first child is due.
