Fred Couples is the owner of one of the most-memorable shots in Masters history, and he came close to replicating it on Friday.
Fred Couples channels 1992 luck again at No. 12
The lie was slightly different, but Fred Couples’ tee shot at No. 12 brought back memories of 1992.
Couples carried a three-stroke lead into No. 12 during the final round of the 1992 Masters. His approach to the par-3 was short and he nearly found Rae’s Creek. The ball famously hung up on the slope, however, and he hit a brilliant chip to make a par. He went on to win the green jacket that year.
Move ahead 22 years and Couples once again headed into No. 12 at Augusta in contention. His tee shot once again came up short, only to avoid the creek by the slimmest of margins. The shot instantly brought back memories to 1992. You can see the original below on the left and the 2014 remake on the right.
Like many classic movie remakes, the new version couldn’t quite hold up to the original. While Couples got up-and-down for par in 1992, he was unable to do the same on Friday and wound up making a bogey. At 2-under, he remains in the mix, tied for fifth place.
