2014 RBC Heritage results: Matt Kuchar holes out, wins by a stroke

Matt Kuchar started the day four strokes off the lead, but a scorching front nine and the shot of the day at No. 18 allowed him to walk away with the win.

Scoring conditions were set up to allow a player to go low in the final round at the RBC Heritage and Matt Kuchar took full advantage. He erased a four-shot deficit to start the round and took the lead for good on a brilliant shot from the bunker.

Kuchar birdied six holes on the front nine to make the turn in 30. Another birdie on No. 10 dropped him to 7-under on the round and not only had him in the lead, but put everyone on 59 watch. He cooled off drastically from there, but was still in the lead heading into No. 17. He ran into some issues on the green, eventually three-putting for a bogey to drop to 10-under and into a share of the lead with Luke Donald. Kuchar found more trouble on No. 18, with his approach finding a greenside bunker. Now, he needed to get up-and-down from par, just to have a shot at making a playoff. He did one better, holing the shot from the bunker for an improbable birdie.

The shot dropped Kuchar to 11-under and gave him the win after Donald was unable to answer back. Donald has had several close calls at RBC Heritage throughout his career and 2014 proved to be yet another top-three finish. He needed at least a birdie down the stretch, but parred his final six holes to come up just short. The win capped an impressive week for Kuchar, who was the first-round leader after opening with a 66. Like many players, he struggled in tough conditions on Friday, only to surge back with the round of the day on Sunday.

Although several players shot in the 60s in the final round, few were able to really put together a round to challenge for the lead. Of the contenders at the start of the day, no one shot better than a 67. Ben Martin was also in contention before closing the round with a bogey and three pars to finish at 9-under. He was joined in third place by John Huh. Jordan Spieth carded his best round of the event, shooting a 4-under 67 to finish at 4-under and in a tie for 12th.
