Rickie Fowler tops another awful tee shot, is really good at hitting bad golf shots

One of the best players in the world is becoming really good at nearly whiffing the ball in front of the cameras.

Rickie Fowler is really good at hitting good golf shots. It also appears that he’s really good at hitting bad golf shots, which does take a bit of skill. During a Pro-am at the 2014 Zurich Classic, Fowler, who’s one of the headliners this week in New Orleans, duffed one right into the turf with his driver. It was as bad a top off the tee that someone paid millions for his golf abilities can hit, but it was almost certainly on purpose.

Fowler has a bit of history of pulling this off for the cameras. Last fall when Fowler was playing down under in the Australian PGA Championship, he nearly whiffed while topping a ball just inches away from where it started on the range. It was most likely an act for the hovering Aussie cameras, who zoomed in on Fowler just before his Sunday round in the final pairing with eventual winner Adam Scott.

Fowler would later tweet that the topped shot was, indeed, missed on purpose.

So we can all probably calm down about the footage from this week. We’ve seen enough awful shots this year, whether it’s Henrik Stenson’s cold dead shank, Scott Brown’s similar hosel rocket, or Justin Rose’s extremely chunky approach shot in Tampa. Those all occurred during a competitive round and until that happens to Fowler, we’ll continue to assume he’s just good at hitting bad golf shots when it doesn’t really count.

h/t to Adam Fonseca for bringing this week’s top to our attention
