2014 Zurich Classic: Tee times, pairings for Friday’s round

Play continues from TPC Louisiana on Friday with many of the notable names hitting the course in the morning, including some in need of big rounds.

Birdies are often plentiful at the Zurich Classic. If Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel are going to stick around for the weekend, they’ll need their share of red numbers on Friday. Fowler and Horschel, the defending Zurich Classic champion, joined Patrick Reed in the featured pairing in the first round on Thursday. The three will be paired again in the second round and all three have work to do.

Horschel and Reed shot 2-over rounds of 74 on Thursday while Fowler opened the tournament with a 3-over 75, good for a tie for 133rd place. Players can bounce back from a sub par round in most tournaments, but scores often approach 20-under at the Zurich Classic, leaving less margin for error with an over-par round. On Thursday, 101 of the 156-player field shot even par or better.

The projected cut following the first round sits at 1-under, meaning Horschel, Fowler and Reed will likely need rounds in the mid-60s to make the weekend. The three will be on the course early, with a scheduled tee time of 8:30 a.m. ET.

Justin Rose doesn’t have as much work to do to make the cut, but at 1-under heading into Friday, he’ll need to go low if he’s going to challenge for the lead. He’ll open the day nine strokes off the lead and tee off with Ernie Els and David Toms at 8:40 a.m.

Everyone is chasing Ben Martin, who will open the second round with the lead after he set a course record with a 10-under 62. Martin will also be part of the morning wave, teeing off on No. 10 at 9:30 a.m.

The afternoon groups don’t have quite as much name recognition as the morning wave, but there will be a few familiar faces. Keegan Bradley opened with a 3-under 69 and will attempt to make it two straight rounds in the 60s when he tees off at 1:30 p.m. in a group with Charles Howell III and Matt Every. They’ll hit the course one group after the threesome of Retief Goosen, Nick Watney and Kevin Stadler.

Here is a complete look at the second round tee sheet. All times Eastern.
