Shell Houston Open 2014: Tee times, pairings for Saturday’s round

Sergio Garcia leads heading into the weekend with Matt Kuchar and others chasing. Who will claim the 54-hole lead?

Scott Halleran

The Shell Houston Open is the final tuneup for players attempting to round into major championship form and if the first two rounds are any indication, Sergio Garcia and Matt Kuchar are more than ready for Augusta. Following a 7-under 65 on Friday, Garcia sits atop the leaderboard at 12-under. Kuchar is just one shot back, alone in second place. The two will form one of the more intriguing pairings of the third round.

Kuchar and Garcia have had very similar careers on the course. Both have been consistent performers and while they’ve come close a few times, neither has been able to capture a major championship. They’ll get another opportunity to change that soon, but before the focus turns to the Masters, they still have two more rounds to play. A similar round to Friday and the two might just go back-and-forth well into the red on Saturday. They’ll play in the final group, teeing off at 10:30 a.m. ET, joined by Matt Jones.

A lot of eyes have been on Phil Mickelson this week after he suffered a pulled muscle last week and was forced to withdraw. The injury hasn’t been an issue thus far as he’s 6-under through two rounds. He’ll have some ground to make up if he’s going to be a factor on Sunday. Mickelson will tee off at 10 a.m., playing with Jim Renner and Jason Gore. A few other notable names will hit the course early Saturday morning. Rickie Folwer is scheduled to tee off in a group at 9:20 a.m. while Masters betting favorite Rory McIlroy will tee it up at 9 a.m.
