Masters Champions Dinner 2014: Adam Scott serves Moreton Bay Bugs at Augusta National

A photo from inside the Augusta clubhouse at the 2014 Champions Dinner has emerged, and the assembled group looks eager to eat some “bugs.”

Unlike last year with Bubba Watson, Adam Scott did not keep the contents of his Masters Champions Dinner menu a closely guarded secret. We knew the meal was going to be Australian based, and Scott had Moreton Bay Bugs flown in from his native country.

The name is a bit menacing, but bay bugs are just the term Aussies use for a kind of flatheaded lobster that looks like this.

One of the traditions of the Champions Dinner is that the reigning champ not only sets the menu, but also foots the bill. Scott ensured folks on Tuesday that he had the “bugs” brought in from Brisbane.

They are legitimate bugs, the real deal. I’m not going to serve up anything second rate tonight. I’ve got to go all‑out to impress these guys.

Scott said kangaroo and crocodile were considered options, but he opted not to do anything too exotic so he stuck to the bugs.

I kind of picked nothing too exotic, because I didn’t think any of the other guys would appreciate it, kangaroo and crocodile, or anything like that. It’s along those lines of surf and turf, and it will be off the barbie, which is what I like. I would love to have served some meat pies at the cocktail hour, but it couldn’t be arranged.

For dessert, the Aussie provided the Augusta staff the recipe for his mom’s Pavlova, a fruit-based dessert that’s comparable to a meringue. While Bubba kept his menu secret until pictures of it came out after the dinner, the meal was actually very plain. So it’s good to have Scott switch it up with some unique and cultural elements from his homeland.

Finally, here’s a photo of the assembled group on Tuesday night inside the clubhouse, with Scott seated in the front row alongside ANGC chairman Billy Payne and Arnold Palmer. Tiger Woods may have been absent, but this is a pretty impressive collection nonetheless:

Now enough with the foodstuffs and on to golf.

UPDATE: And here’s a photo of the official menu from 2008 winner Trevor Immelman:
