Masters Par 3 Contest results: Ryan Moore challenges course record, comes away with the win

All eyes will be on the big course at Augusta National beginning on Thursday, but before the 2014 Masters begins, the action was on the little course on Wednesday with the Par 3 Contest. Dozens of players -- many joined by kids or other family members -- participated with Ryan Moore coming away with the win.

Moore came close to tying the Par 3 Contest scoring record, coming up a stroke shy. He needed just 21 shots to make it around the nine holes, finishing at 6-under and two strokes ahead of the rest of the field. The course record of 20 is held by Art Wall and Gay Brewer, and Moore came within inches of joining the two. His tee shot on No. 9 flew past the pin, but spun back and just missed rolling in for an ace. He settled for a tap in birdie to finish off the round. The Par 3 Contest has been held annually since 1960, but no player has won it and the green jacket in the same weekend.

There were three hole-in-ones on Wednesday, with Mark O’Meara, Stewart Alexander and Matt Jones notching aces. There have now been 80 hole-in-ones recorded in the history of the event. Nearly 100 players participated, but more than half recorded a “not scored” for either not finishing the round or allowing a caddie or someone else take a shot for them. A few players took a mulligan, which also left them with a not scored.

The field included a few legends of the game, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer, who played together. Nicklaus got off to a good start with a birdie on No. 1. He officially logged a not scored, finishing at even-par. Player also finished at even-par but had an official round and finished tied for 21st place. Palmer took an early exit, playing five holes.
