Inside the NBA almost makes staying up until 2 a.m. every night in the spring worth it. It’s the best postgame show in sports, and a big reason for that distinction is that the sport is sometimes incidental to the show. The last two nights, I’ve been up too late watching but was instantly buoyed by the discussion of Charles Barkley’s golf swing.

The Auburn man was scheduled to play at Shoal Creek in Alabama as part of a pro-am event for the Regions Tradition, a major championship on the senior circuit. Barkley made the short trip over from Atlanta and was back in time for Wednesday night’s show on TNT, where they ran through his highlights. His group, as you’d expect, drew the largest galleries at Shoal Creek, playing alongside Fred Couples, the signature star of the Champions Tour, and Bruce Pearl, the new AU basketball coach.
We’ve all seen video of Barkley’s motion, but that didn’t make this latest reel any less horrifying or enjoyable. It’s scary to go into a crowd armed with this thing, and Chuck was a little late yelling fore on his opening tee sheet. The best part, however, is his attempt to get out of the championship-level rough at the one minute mark (h/t to Kyle Porter)
Even after all that tutoring from Tiger Woods’ old coach, Hank Haney, not much has changed in Barkley’s swing.
Barkley did say on Wednesday night’s show that Pearl was horrible too, and he was heartened by that while chopping it around the course in full public view. Pearl did, however, ironically correct him on the rules of golf after Barkley teed his ball up in front of the markers (via Kevin Scarbinsky of AL.com).
“I know this is the SEC,” Pearl said, “but we actually play by the rules here.”
We were robbed of Johnny Manziel playing the pro-am over in Dallas on Wednesday, but this was not a bad consolation.
