PGA Tour stock report: Adam Scott rises to No. 1, Tiger Woods’ stock falling?

It was an interesting week in golf. More first-time winners broke through, there is a new No. 1 player in the world, an 11-year-old qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open and Boo Weekley did a very Boo Weekley thing.

Adam Scott took last week off, but he still makes the stock up list thanks to the World Golf Rankings system. Even though he wasn’t in action, Scott jumped Tiger Woods and overtook the No. 1 ranking in the world. It is the first time the 33-year-old has hit No. 1 in the world. Scott added the Crowne Plaza Invitational to his schedule and will tee it up as the top player in the world at Colonial. He may need a good showing to stay on top, as Henrik Stenson could overtake the No. 1 spot if he finishes higher at the BMW PGA Championship than Scott does at Colonial. Regardless of what happens next week, Scott can cross off major accomplishment:

First-time winners

Thanks to some excellent short-game work in the final round, Brendon Todd secured the first PGA Tour win of his career last week at the Byron Nelson Championship. The PGA Tour winners list can often be a who’s-who of golf names, but plenty of fresh faces are breaking through this year. With his win, the 28-year-old Todd became the eighth first-time winner on Tour this season. Todd wasn’t the only player notching the first victory on their respective tour last week:

Justin Rose’s son Leo

It seems one of the first acts of any athlete after winning a trophy is to use it to consume food and beverage. The Stanley Cup has been famously used as a vessel for any number of food and beverage while Jason Dufner once filled the Wanamaker Trophy with 43 beers. Justin Rose didn’t use the U.S. Open trophy to eat or drink, but his 4-year-old son did.

“Leo ate some ice cream out of it - so he was the first to christen the trophy,” Rose said (via the Edmonton Journal). “I had not even had a drink, but he had some ice cream out of it and we got some great video, I think will last a lifetime, and some great memories.”

How many kids can say they ate ice cream out of the U.S. Open trophy? Maybe Leo will use it for some pudding if his dad can repeat as champion and keep the trophy for another year.

Tiger Woods

Woods, still working his way back from back surgery, added some insult to injury this week, dropping from the top of the world rankings. While not unexpected, the fall to No. 2 -- with likely a steeper drop to come -- is just another example of how much the recent back surgery has derailed his career. Woods still doesn’t have a timetable for when he’ll swing a club again and revealed more of just how bad the back pain was.

“Prior to the surgery, I didn’t think I would have much of a playing career if I felt like this because ... I couldn’t get out of bed,” Woods said recently.

Woods has dropped from the No. 1 spot before and successfully re-earned the top spot and he’ll have that challenge again when he returns ... whenever he returns.

Golfers 12 years old and older

If you’ve been feeling inadequate about your golf game recently, that feeling is likely about to get worse. Lucy Li, an 11-year old clinched a spot in the U.S. Women’s Open by winning her sectional qualifier by seven strokes. Li didn’t win by default either, shooting 74-68 to win on a legit Half Moon Bay track. There are likely pros on the PGA Tour who hadn’t hit their first golf shot at 11 years old and Li is shooting 68 and playing her way into a major. Everyone likes to talk about Jordan Spieth as the rising young star in golf, but Spieth didn’t make his first U.S. Open appearance until he was 18.

Boo Weekley’s shirt

How is it possible for Boo Weekley’s shirt to have its stock drop? That’s because Boo Weekley doesn’t wear a shirt. He just rolls around wearing the tartan plaid jacket he won at the 2013 Crowne Plaza Invitational with no shirt underneath:
