How to watch the 2014 Memorial golf tournament live online, TV schedule, radio and more

The Memorial always draws a strong field and provokes lots of Jack Nicklaus nostalgia. Here’s how to watch one of the year’s better events this week at Muirfield Village.

Scott Halleran

The PGA Tour rolls into Columbus for one of the best tournaments all year, the Memorial at the home of Jack Nicklaus. This is annually rated as one of the tour pros favorite events, the imprimatur of Nicklaus and his design masterpiece, Muirfield Village, drawing a loaded field. And this year, golf and the Tour finally have a bit of momentum, with Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy both winning in dramatic fashion on Sunday.

McIlroy had been close all year, and probably should have had one or two wins before Sunday’s come-from-behind victory at the BMW PGA Championship, the Euro Tour’s biggest event. There was plenty of psychoanalysis done on the correlation of that win coming just a couple days after calling off his wedding to Caroline Wozniacki, but Rory had been in form all year and a win was coming soon. Now he’ll probably be the favorite in every event he enters for awhile, including this week and at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in two weeks.

Scott, who cemented his status as the new No. 1 in the world rankings, is right behind Rory for the oddsmakers. He was in danger of losing his No. 1 ranking after just one week if he finished outside the top 13, but after nearly missing the cut, he shot back-to-back rounds of 66 on the weekend and beat Jason Dufner in a playoff at Colonial. He’ll play alongside Rory in the first two rounds for what will be the must-follow group on Thursday and Friday.

The coverage will be split between Golf Channel and CBS, with the cable network taking the first two days on its own before CBS comes in for their customary weekend coverage. This is probably CBS’ biggest tournament until August and the back-to-back stretch of the WGC tourney at Firestone and the season’s final major. Jim Nantz will be all worked up, waxing poetic on the traditions at “Jack’s place” and the legendary Golden Bear. They’ll start things a little earlier than normal for the final round on Sunday, going live at 2:30 p.m. ET.

In addition to the TV coverage, both Golf Channel and CBS (via PGATour.com) will provide streaming simulcasts all four days. PGATour.com will also put their featured groups and featured holes streams back into play at Muirfield Village, focusing on a crucial par-5 and a par-3 the first two rounds.

This is a tournament that’s plagued by bad weather, which always seems to throw the schedule off. Even in October, when this venue hosted the Presidents Cup during a typically dryer stretch, rains pounded the Columbus area all three days. It’s likely we get some disruption to the schedule this year. At the moment, there’s a 40 percent chance of rain on Thursday but after that it looks pretty good for the final three rounds.
