The Memorial Tournament 2014: Tee times, pairings for Thursday’s round

One of the top non-major fields of the year is set to begin play at Muirfield Village.

Scott Halleran

Now in its 40th year, the Memorial Tournament has developed into one of the biggest non-major events on the PGA Tour schedule. That is the case again this year, and the prestige of the event is displayed by the field it attracts. The 2014 group is loaded with the best players in the world, including seven of the current top 10 players in the World Golf Rankings. The field includes 21 of the current top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings. The loaded field will lead to some notable early round tee times, beginning early on Thursday.

Adam Scott will tee it up as the No. 1 player in the world for a second straight week. He’s coming off an impressive win at the Crowne Plaza Invitational and will be joined by another player coming off a big win. Rory McIlroy won the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour last week, his first Euro Tour victory since 2012. McIlroy moved up to No. 6 in the world with the win, jumping Jason Day. Day, who will join the other two in the group, is playing in his first event since the Masters. He’s been limited by a thumb injury and the Memorial will be just his second event since winning the WGC-Accenture in late February. It’s a powerhouse group that will be out later in the day, when their every shot should be carried during the Golf Channel broadcast window (starting at 2:30 p.m.). The three are scheduled to play in the afternoon, with a 1:16 p.m. ET tee time.

It’s been a rough 2014 for Phil Mickelson, who is yet to post a top-10 finish this season. With the U.S. Open quickly approaching, the Memorial will be one of the final opportunities to get into top form before Mickelson attempts to capture that elusive final leg to the career grand slam. He’ll also be in one of the marquee afternoon groups in the first round, playing with Jordan Spieth and Bill Haas. The three are set to go off the first tee at 1:05 p.m. Defending Memorial champion Matt Kuchar will tee off in the morning, playing with Justin Rose and Steve Stricker. That group is set for an 8:26 a.m. tee time.
