The Memorial Tournament: Bubba Watson atop the early leaderboard

The afternoon wave is starting to make its way around Muirfield and everyone is chasing Bubba Watson, who is tied for the first-round lead at 6-under.

If the early action during the first round of the Memorial Tournament is any indication, scores may go low this week at Muirfield. Birdies were plentiful for many players in the morning wave, including Bubba Waston. He carded six birdies an an eagle on Thursday and is tied for the early lead at 6-under.

Watson couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start with two birdies and an eagle through his first six holes. He ran into a little trouble after that with back-to-back bogeys. However, those would be the only shots he dropped all day. He closed the round strong with four birdies in his final five holes, including three straight to cap off his day. Watson’s round of 66 was matched by Paul Casey and Chris Kirk, making an early three-way tie for the lead.

Keegan Bradley didn’t use his traditional belly putter, and the shorter stick was working well on Thursday. He didn’t drop a shot in the opening round, carding five birdies on his way to a 5-under 67. He’s currently tied for fourth place, one stroke off the lead. Hunter Mahan is also in contention, two back, after he shot a 4-under 68.

The opening round did not go well for Matt Kuchar. He was up-and-down all day, finishing with five birdies, three bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys. Despite the five birdies, he still finished with a 2-over 74.

The afternoon wave is now making its way around the course with Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson and others a few holes into their rounds. Scott is 1-under through four holes while Mickelson, and his playing partner Jordan Spieth, are 1-under through five holes.
