Wells Fargo Championship payout 2014: Winning share is $1.242 million of purse

J.B. Holmes is on the verge of capping an incredible comeback from multiple serious injuries, a win at Quail Hollow that would be the biggest payday of his career.

J.B. Holmes has more than $11 million in career earnings on the PGA Tour, but a win on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship would be the biggest payday of his career and complete a remarkable comeback from brain surgery and serious injuries to both his ankle and elbow. Holmes has two prior wins on the Tour, both at the FBR Open. But those injuries put him through a six-year winless drought, something he’s close to ending Sunday afternoon at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

Wells Fargo Championship

The Wells Fargo Championship always draws a loaded field, it’s one of the best non-major stops of the year and played on a course that the players almost universally love. Holmes is holding off some of the biggest names in the game, edging guys like Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Justin Rose, and Rory McIroy on the back nine on Sunday.

A win for Holmes would earn him a $1,242,000 of the total $6.9 million purse. That’s one of the larger pots on Tour, but obviously the biggest cash game of them all is next week at TPC Sawgrass -- a new and bigger $10 million purse is set to be paid out at The Players. Holmes earned $936K for his first FBR Open win in 2006, and $1.08M for his second win there in 2008. This will be his second million-dollar payday, but after all that’s happened, the money might be secondary for Holmes. His play has almost certainly locked up a spot next week, and a win will secure a 2015 Masters berth and playing privileges he’s struggled to keep through all the injuries.

If there’s no tie, second-place should earn just over $730K. Holmes has earned $623K this entire season. Last year, Derek Ernst, an unknown player struggling to pay for travel between stops, cashed a life-changing $1.206M check.

Update: Holmes did hold on for career payday. Here are the final payout numbers from Quail Hollow:
