Hideki Matsuyama’s driver breaks on 72nd hole

Hideki Matsuyama is headed to a playoff at the Memorial and he’ll have to use a new driver after a mishap on No. 18.

Matt Sullivan

It’s been a very strange final round at the Memorial Tournament. The leaderboard has shifted dramatically late in the round with several contenders falling off the pace. Hideki Matsuyama was in the lead at one point, only to drop off late. The hits kept coming on No. 18 when after hitting an errant tee shot, Matsuyama hit his driver on the turf, and the head fell off.

Matsuyama went on to make birdie and force a playoff. With the tournament headed to a playoff, Matsuyama will be able to replace the club, although he’ll have to use a new driver for the extra holes.
