2014 U.S. Open odds: Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott favored at Pinehurst

It’s U.S. Open week, and while the biggest moneymaker in the game is still out, a couple major champions and superstars start the week as favorites.

With Tiger Woods absent yet again from a major championship, his Nike partner, Rory McIlroy assumes the role of favorite at the 2014 U.S. Open. McIlroy starts the week at Pinehurst as a 10/1 favorite, slightly edging world No. 1 Adam Scott in a oddsmakers’ eyes. The two-time major winner has had a pretty strong 2014 season so far, winning the BMW PGA Championship, the Euro Tour’s biggest event, and consistently finishing inside the top 10 everywhere else (whether it’s backdoor or not). He probably should have at least one or two more wins (Honda Classic, Abu Dhabi Championship), but despite some struggles closing on the weekend, his game is in entirely different shape than the mess of last year and he’s a solid favorite.

This will be much different test for McIlroy than the Congressional setup where he ran away with the 2011 U.S. Open, his first major title. That week, Congressional and the mid-Atlantic were pounded with rain and the softer conditions allowed Rory, a high-ball hitter, to bomb it all over the course and set scoring records in the process. Pinehurst No. 2 will be browned out, likely running more firm and fast and demanding that players have a good ground game and be able to chip it consistently up around the green. At times, the Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw redesign of this Donald Ross classic plays and looks like an Open Championship venue across the pond. That’s a tournament and a typical course setup that Rory has said he doesn’t necessarily prefer, even though he’s from Northern Ireland.

So Rory has the form but his game might not be best suited to this Pinehurst course he’s never seen before this month. The odds, however, aren’t always set based on who has the best chance to win, but more on who will draw the most betting interest. Tiger will always, maybe forever, be the favorite in every tournament he plays -- regardless of his play coming into the event, injury, or anything else. Rory is the next closest thing we’ll get to a Tiger, which isn’t very close, but he and Scott will continue to be the big name favorites at these events while Woods is out injured.
