Flip-flops, a cigarette, and a stand golf bag: This guy’s already won the U.S. Open

There will be hours and hours of pre-tournament coverage and we won’t top this moment on the driving range at Pinehurst.

I don’t know who this is or where he came from, but he’s definitely now my favorite at the U.S. Open and the champion of the driving range. He’s schlepping a regular old weekend chopper’s stand bag, untethered to some sponsor logos plastered all over a big tour bag, wearing flip-flops, an untucked and logoless shirt and shorts, and casually puffing smoke all over the range. He’s a gift to the U.S. Open, and whether I see him again this week or not, I will always remember him. Here’s a musical accompaniment to commemorate his appearance:

Did he just walk onto the range looking for a Monday game at what is an otherwise public course?

Rickie Fowler had three people around him, mostly trim and wearing branded freshly tucked-in gear while snapping photos of his swing and the clubs in his bag. The status contrast was stark, but this (presumably) caddie owned this part of the driving range at Pinehurst.

I thank the USGA for making this possible, and for Golf Channel’s cameras documenting it all. It’s just Monday, but I already have a winner for the week at our national championship.
