Phil Mickelson makes birdie from the cart path at the Scottish Open

With a port-o-potty hovering to his left, Phil Mickelson pures a wedge shot off the cart path at Royal Aberdeen.

We’ve already seen Phil Mickelson messing around with his wedges this week in Scotland, practicing his patented backwards over-the-head shot in practice at the Scottish Open. On Thursday, during competitive play, Mickelson also made an unorthodox pass with a wedge Royal Aberdeen, opting to play his ball off the cart path.

This is isn’t the most unusual play, as these pros sometimes prefer the clean, hard lie of some concrete over the surrounding junk if they’re way off the course. And Phil was wandering somewhere off on the Scottish terrain, with what appears to be a port-o-pottie just off to his left, gravel, and high fescue grasses all around him. We saw K.J. Choi stick one from off the cart path just a couple weeks ago in Hartford, and Mickelson had much the same success, just brushing his wedge off the path and getting his ball up onto the green.

This was not a new circumstance for Phil, either, as he just pulled off a comparable shot in March at Doral. That one was a bit trickier, as the path was nestled much closer to the green and needed to stick or spin the ball more. But he still pulled it off well enough.

After making the shot today, one has to convert and make the birdie, right? Phil rolled it in for the red number and posted a 3-under 68 to get into the early top 10.
