Golfer Jesper Parnevik breaks rib falling off segway, posts video of accident anyway

Here’s Jesper Parnevik with the latest exhibit for why golfers should not be considered world class athletes.

A series of injuries, some occurring in the oddest ways, derailed Jesper Parnevik’s once-promising career. The Swede, who is now 49 and well past the prime of his career, plays sparingly on either side of the Atlantic and has struggled to find a spot in most major events. Well, for the next month, he won’t have to worry about grinding to get back to a full-time position, because he’s now out injured with a broken rib.

How, exactly, Parnevik sustained the injury is the latest freak occurrence in several during his pro career. Parnevik fell off a segway.

Brandt Snedeker injured his knee last fall in China also hopping off a segway. Unlike Parnevik, Snedeker was in form and ranked in the top 10 in the world. Footage of that Snedeker accident at a corporate event never surfaced, but Parnevik, fortunately, has no issue making fun of himself and posted video of his fall on Instagram.

In the late 90s, Parnevik was on track for a lengthy and decorated career with decades of major championship contention. Now, he might be best known as the guy who set up his children’s au pair, Elin Nordegren, with Tiger Woods.

Parnevik has made three starts on the PGA Tour this year, but this injury should end any chance of making another start on the American circuit this season. As John Strege notes, Parnevik has had two hip surgeries, a broken lumbar vertebrae, and almost severed a finger during a boating accident. And now add the broken rib, which thanks to the video evidence he’s provided, has to be the most ignominious injury of his career.
