The Greenbrier Classic may not have a title sponsor but the amount of cash on the line is right up there with your regular PGA Tour stop. Jim Justice, a coal industry billionaire, bought the Greenbrier resort in 2009 and has poured a ton of money into revitalizing and promoting the West Virginia destination. One of its biggest weeks of the year is obviously this golf tournament, which is just in its fifth year since Justice took over and was able to get to the Tour to add it to the rota.
2014 Greenbrier Classic purse: Winner will earn $1.17 million of total $6.5 million payout
There’s a lot of money up for grabs in the hills of West Virginia on Sunday afternoon.

And even though it’s not in a major market, Justice and the Greenbrier Classic put up a hefty $6.5M purse. That’s just as much as Tiger Woods’ Quicken Loans National last week at Congressional, and it guarantees the usual $1M-plus winner’s check.
Angel Cabrera held a three-shot lead at one point on the back nine, and he’s trying to break his non-major winless record. Cabrera, of course, is well-known for showing up at the majors and coming out of nowhere to compete, contend, and win. His only two PGA Tour wins are a Masters and U.S. Open, and he’s obviously been in the mix several other times during those four big weekends. This would be a nice little addition to those signature victories, and also earn him $1.17M in winnings.
George McNeil, who fired a final round 61 that included a hole-in-one, is waiting in the clubhouse and hoping Cabrera drops a shot or two down the stretch in order to make it a playoff. McNeil has two PGA Tour wins and almost $9.3M in career earnings, while Cabrera has cashed almost $22M in his Tour career.
Here are the payout totals from the $6.5M purse for the top 25 this week in West Virginia:
