Sure, this only applies to a small fraction of our readership, but it’s worth mentioning regardless. Michigan defensive back Troy Woolfolk was pulled over by police last night, didn’t have his license, and had to come up with something.
If You’re A Famous Athlete Being Questioned By Police... Google Images!
Ah, technology (via Yahoo)
Amazing. And it goes mostly without saying, but it’s completely surreal that...
A) All athletes have smartphones nowadays, thus the ability to Google Image himself on the spot.
B) Google images has an entire library of photos for nearly every major college athlete in the country. A women’s field hockey player could have pulled this off.
C) The cop actually accepted this, and it worked.
D) To put a finishing touch on his post-modern commentary on media, Troy tweeted about it.
To give you some perspective, when Larry Bird was in college, Magic Johnson heard about his exploits and assumed he was black. 40 years later, everybody can find out what some random dude named Troy Woolfolk looks like.
The Google trick couldn’t work for everyone, of course. For instance, here’s my first result on an image search for my name:
...And that’s why I carry my license when I drive. But Troy Woolfolk, and most any other athlete in America, can rest easy. No ID? Hand the cop your iPhone and tell him to find a JPEG. It’s 2010, dude.*
*Note: Actually saying this will likely lead to (completely justified) police brutality.
