Remember When Dave Chappelle Disappeared?

Apropos of nothing but A.D.D. on Friday afternoon, here’s a great, old New York Times article from 2005. The crazy thing about Chappelle’s disappearance is, it was so strange, we didn’t even really know how to contextualize it. Or, you know, joke about it. It just sorta happened and left everybody dumbfounded.

↵↵...He resurfaced a few weeks later in Durban, South Africa, where, he said, he was on a spiritual retreat. As the rescheduled premiere date of his show came and went, and Comedy Central began replacing promotions for the program with advertisements for other coming series, it became clear that “Chappelle’s Show” was no more.

↵↵Even now, it’s neither tragedy nor comedy; just this weird thing that everyone concedes. Like “Yeah, one day the funniest person on the planet apparently went crazy only maybe he didn’t.” Anyway, the Times article profiles one of his big shows after his journey to South Africa, a show that was supposed to be the beginning of a comeback. Only the comeback never happened.

↵And we still miss him almost every single day.
