Washington, D.C., powers DeMatha and Gonzaga played twice in the regular season, each winning at home. On Monday, they’ll play for the championship of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship at American University.
WCAC Boys Championship: DeMatha Goes For Third Straight Title, Faces Gonzaga
DeMatha (24-7) has won the past two WCAC titles, beating Gonzaga (24-6) in the final each year, and also claimed five of the past six. The winner of Monday’s game will play Theodore Roosevelt, the champion of the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA), on March 7 for the city championship.
In Sunday’s semifinals, DeMatha beat Paul VI Catholic 52-47. Jairus Lyles’ 15 points led Dematha. Gonzaga sophomore guard Nate Britt scored 21 points in an 80-63 victory over McNamara.
Gonzaga beat DeMatha 66-52 in their first meeting. DeMatha won 57-52 in the second.
“Everything we do here in the D.C. area comes down to DeMatha and Gonzaga,” DeMatha coach Mike Jones said in Adam Zagoria’s preview. “No matter who’s having a good year, who’s having a bad year, if both teams are having good years, these games are on another level.”
