Brunswick head coach Bryant Stith and his team finally broke through Saturday after four straight finals losses, winning the Virginia’s Division 3 championship 54-48 versus Waynesbroro at the Siegel Center in Richmond.
Virginia Boys Finals: Brunswick Breaks Through For Division 3 Championship
Brunswick (29-1), a southern Virginia school, led 35-14 at halftime after Waynesboro struggled early, making only five of 21 shots in the first half.
A furious second-half comeback led by four 3-pointers from Skylar Phillips helped Waynesbroro narrow the margin, while the defense held Brunswick to a four-point third quarter.
Waynesboro, west of Charlottesville, closed to within 46-43 with several minutes remaining in the fourth quarter after back-to-back 3-pointers, but Brunswick made seven of eight free throws in the final minutes to seal the victory.
Stith, who played at Brunswick before starring at Virginia and later the NBA, became the first to win Virginia titles as both a player and a coach.
