Virginia Boys Finals: Radford Claims Boys, Girls Sweep Of Basketball Titles

Radford became the first school to sweep Virginia state boys and girls championships in seven years when the boys team defeated James River 66-63 on Saturday in the Group A Division 2 final in Richmond.

It was Radford’s second title in three seasons.

James River (23-7) cut a dougle-digit deficit in the final minutes, but a slow first half sunk the Knights.

Poor shooting (6-for-18) and 14 first-half turnovers led to a 24-17 deficit at halftime for Richmond-area James River.

Junior guard Dontae Carter got off to a slow start himself for Radford (25-3),making only two of nine shots in the first half, but finished with a team-high 19 points. Senior Jerome Alexander added 17, 10 in the first half.

Senior forward Chris Ware, who also starred on the James River football team, led the Knights with 18 points. Junior guard John Bennett added 13.

Radford is the first Virginia school to sweep boys and girls titles since Altavista in 2004.
