North Point kept Balitmore-area schools from securing a sweep in four Maryland finals, beating Patterson 76-72 on Saturday at the Comcast Center in College Park.
North Point Wins Class 4A Title, Completes Undefeated Season
Located in West Waldorf, North Point (26-0) used pressure defense to keep sophomore Patterson star Aquille Carr in check during the first half, holding the 5-foot-6 guard to seven points.
Carr went on to score 20 points in the second half, but did so on nine of 32 shooting from the field.
Patterson’s other players fared little better, hitting only 37% themselves. As a team, Patterson (25-2) made a paltry two of 14 from three-point range (14%).
During the third quarter, North Point led by as many as 16 points before Patterson cut the deficit to eight.
They took the lead, 66-65 with three minutes left in the game, but failed to score in the final two minutes.
North Point made 17-19 free throws in the second half to help hold off Patterson.
Naim Muhammad led North Point with 20 points and 11 rebounds on 10-12 shooting including a layup to seal the win.
Gerel Simmons added 19 points in the win
Myrek Fowlkes added 16 points for Patterson in defeat, along with 11 rebounds.
For North Point, the victory marked the school’s first ever boys basketball championship in its first state tournament appearance.
Before today’s loss, Patterson had won 15 games in a row and was also seeking its first every title in boys basketball.
