A three pointer from Pete Simoneau with three seconds left gave Potomac Falls a 58-55 victory over Hidden Valley and a second straight VHSL Group AA Division 4 state championship Saturday night at the Siegel Center in Richmond.
Potomac Falls Holds Off Hidden Valley Comeback, Repeats as Division 4 Champs
Scrappy Hidden Valley (20-8), a school from Roanoke making its first appearance in the finals, capped a furious late comeback with a three pointer by Tyler Walker to tie the game with only seconds remaining, only to see Potomac Falls hit the game-winner.
The only Loudon County school to ever win a state title in basketball, Potomac Falls (27-1) took a 34-26 lead into halftime behind 15 points from senior guard Lukas Mihailovich and another 10 points from fellow senior guard Brendon Chesson.
The reigning champs tried to slow the ballgame late, but a string of poor possessions and an attacking Hidden Valley offense helped eliminate the Potomac Falls lead, which stood at 43-35 following three quarters.
Several three pointers closed the gap before a layup gave Hidden Valley its first lead at 52-51 with 1:41 remaining, the first Titan lead since early in the first quarter.
Mihailovich, who led Potomac Falls with 22 points, finished the game on the bench after suffering a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter.
Walker scored a team-high 19 points for Hidden Valley.
