Kansas 2A Final: Berean Academy Defends Title With Defense
Berean won despite scoring only 14 points in the first half and missing 16 of 26 free throws. The key to Berean’s victory was defense. Lyndon (18-7) didn’t have a player with more than six points. Berean had a similar shut-down win in the semifinals, a 39-37 victory over Washington County.
In the final, Berean scored 17 of its 41 points in the fourth quarter, when it pulled away. Joshua Hoover’s 3-point shot in the final minute of the third quarter gave Beran a 24-20 lead and sparked the team’s strong finish.
Lyndon, an underdog that entered the state tournament as a No. 7 seed, shot only 36 percent from the field.
Berean is a Wichita-area school. Lyndon is an eastern Kansas school southeast of Topeka.
