Caliche Wins Third Straight Class 1A Title; Dismantles Springfield 72-47

In the Class 1A title game, Springfield’s only lead was 4-2 early in the game. Caliche reeled off 16 consecutive first quarter points and never looked back en route to a 72-47 victory Saturday in Greeley.

Caliche (21-4), a school two hours northeast of Denver, won with a balanced scoring attack led by senior Cody Paxton with 15 points.

Senior Aaron Stieb and sophomore Kyle Gandee each contributed 14 points in the win as well.

For Caliche, the win marks their third consecutive state title and fourth straight finals appearance under head coach Randy Kirkwood.

Matt Self led Springfield (17-7), a school in southeast Colorado, in scoring with 14. However, 10 of those points came in the fourth quarter after the contest was already decided.

Springfield’s finals appearance was its first in 19 years. The school last won the state basketball championship in 1947.
