New York Class D: NY Mills Remains Undefeated With 47-42 Victory Over Coleman Catholic

Winning its first basketball state title since 1982, New Yorks Mills defeated Coleman Catholic 47-42 to win Class D on Saturday at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

A day before head coach Mike Adey’s induction into the New York Basketball Hall of Fame, his Marauders finally broke through -- the team has now won 55 of its last 57 games, with both losses coming to the eventual state champions, including a loss last year to Maple Grove.

The No. 1-ranked team in Class D, New York Mills (24-0) trailed 6-2, but a 17-2 run spanning the first and second quarters resulted in a 22-14 advantage at the half.

Hurley's Coleman Catholic (13-10) was only able to trim one point off the halftime lead after three quarters, trailing 34-27.

A fourth-quarter surge sparked by back-to-back baskets from Coleman Catholic junior guard Benjamin Museda and senior center Chris Chatelain, the only returning starter from last year's state runner-up squad, closed the margin to four points with 1:16 left, but New York Mills held on.

Junior center Matt Welch led the way for the Marauders with 20 points. All-state senior forward Fred Russ added 17 points and 19 rebounds.

For Coleman Catholic, Chatelain led the way with 21 points.

The game was the first of three state finals in the New York State Public high School Athletic Association on Saturday. Later, Pottsdam (25-0) and Burke Catholic were to play in the Class B final, and Syracuse Academy and Friends Academy were playing in the Class C final.

On Sunday, there are finals in classes AA and A.
