Any suspense over the national championship of boys high school basketball was put to rest Monday.
National Champs: St. Anthony Of New Jersey Beats Plainfield, Clinches No. 1
St. Anthony, ranked No. 1 by every national boys high school basketball poll, defeated Plainfield 61-49 on Monday to finish a 33-0 season.
St. Anthony, a private Catholic school from Jersey City, N.J., completed a 33-0 season with a 61-49 victory over Plainfield in New Jersey’s Tournament of Championships at the Izod Center.
Kyle Anderson and Myles Mack, who were teammates last season at Paterson Catholic until it closed in June, scored 17 points apiece for St. Athony. Anthony also had eight assists and six rebounds. (See Adam Zagoria’s story for SB Nation on the two transfers.)
Plainfield was withink six points several times in the fourth quarter but got no closer.
Every national high school poll moved St. Anthony to No. 1 in its rankings earlier this month when the Friars defeated previous No. 1 St. Patrick of New Jersey.
This was the sixth undefeated season for St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley.
