As Twitter makes its IPO today (where it debuted at more than $40/share), I thought it might be fun to look back at the beginnings of everyone’s favorite Twitter account, @MLB.
The first ever tweets from the MLB Twitter account
@MLB has been around for almost five years now. What did it look like at the start?

Here is the first ever tweet (that still exists, at least) from December 2008 on what is now known as @MLB. The account appears to have begun its existence as @mlblogs.
hope you have fun with our new Official MLBlogs Twitter page! Use it to post tweets, and I suggest http://is.gd for short URLs. Go MLBlogs!

A couple more from that first week:
OK, should I set some groundrules so Yankee and Red Sox fans won't fight in here? hahaha Everyone get along nice as followers ensue! :)
— MLB (@MLB) December 30, 2008
And:
@boston_sports How did I get the MLBlogs logo? Um...we created it here in our Design group in April 2005 at MLB.com. (On my hard drive.)
— MLB (@MLB) December 31, 2008
Still more:
Jenn's in the house @philsphollowers yo whattup world champion homes
— MLB (@MLB) December 31, 2008
Some advice:
For the unitiated here, some you want to follow also might be @lancearmstrong @barackinaugural etc more to come
— MLB (@MLB) December 31, 2008
Also @davejmatthews, @mchammer (http://mchammer.mlblogs.com) @starbucks, @magic8bot, @THE_REAL_SHAQ, @marsphoenix
— MLB (@MLB) December 31, 2008
Dave Matthews and MC Hammer!
New Year’s Eve comes around:
wow, fireworks at Central Park next to where I live exploded for about 20 minutes straight...could have funded Lehman!
— MLB (@MLB) January 1, 2009
Not so sure about this one:
wow, 79 cents for a 3-month supply of Gillette foamy shaving cream. I especially loved the water-ski commercial for Gillette. Ads rocks
— MLB (@MLB) January 2, 2009
Sometime in mid-May 2009 at the latest, the account switched over from @mlblogs to @MLB. You can see evidence of that here:
#FollowFriday @JoinRED @FairTradeUSA for being great partners @TEDchris for Ideas Worth Spreading and @MLB so the Mariners get a couple wins
— Starbucks Coffee (@Starbucks) May 22, 2009
And here:
@CrizFresh There are no rules for that stuff. We're all sports fans. You'll hear about some hoops and football and more here. Not a bot feed
— MLB (@MLB) May 24, 2009
But even as of May 21, the account was still tweeting in this voice:
Leaving MLB HQ now, heading crosstown to MLB.com HQ here in Manhattan. Wondering if Longoria could win a Triple Crown. Hmmm.
— MLB (@MLB) May 21, 2009
Today, the @MLB Twitter account looks like this:
Who gets your vote for AL Cy? Reply with #VoteScherzer, #VoteDarvish or #VoteIwakuma pic.twitter.com/kuWVVwcznl
— MLB (@MLB) November 7, 2013
It’s functional, certainly, but it’s not all that fun. It seems to work for the 3.2 million followers @MLB has, though, and, for that, the people buying Twitter up at $40/share this morning thank them. I just miss my updates about fireworks over Central Park.
