I’ve been saying for a few years that it’s time to at least consider scouts for the Hall of Fame. I know that would open a gigantic can of worms, and I’m not sure we want those little suckers getting loose. But I do believe that scouts and coaches are generally underappreciated; the very best of them, anyway.

So I’m thrilled to see that the National Baseball Museum & Hall of Fame will, next month, unveil an extensive new exhibit devoted to scouts. As an occasional researcher, I’m even more thrilled by the news that the Hall is actively collecting scouting reports, currently at upwards of 6,000 and counting. I think they’re supposed to eventually all be digitized and posted on the Web, although maybe that’s too much to ask.
