When Campy got served

This curious wire photo shows Roy Campanella getting papers from a process server named Murray Hoffman (who couldn’t look more like a process server if he tried). And why was Campanella being served? For a reason that would never happen to a modern ballplayer: Failure to pay for injury-related surgery. After a brutal year in 1954, Campy had work done on his hand to the tune of $9,500 in the following offseason and apparently hadn’t paid on it yet when Mr. Hoffman came calling. That amounted to about a quarter of Campanella’s 1955 salary. He rebounded nicely in ‘55, winning the MVP and helping the Brooklyn Dodgers to their only World Championship and was rewarded with a raise. Regardless, that medical bill is still a big bite out of the apple.
