You’ve probably heard that Adam Dunn is going through some funky times. So funky, in fact, that his unfortunate 2011 season is beginning to look like a hitting clinic. Through Wednesday, April 24, Dunn had one hit in his last 38 at-bats. This is by no means historic, but the problem is that prior to this downturn, he was only 6 for 32. Furthermore, he hasn’t been drawing walks, either. He did get three yesterday, but that doubled his season total.

There are a lot of things we don’t expect from Dunn: defense, baserunning, hitting for average. But when he fails to produce what we do expect from him, the overall results are staggering. In fact, among members of the 400-homer club, Dunn has amassed the lowest career WAR. If he gets back on track and enjoys a few more seasons like 2012, he can leave this dubious distinction to Dave Kingman -- but that’s probably the best he can hope for, given that teammate Paul Konerko is next on the list and he’s a moving and distant target.
These are the 10 lowest career WARs among those with at least 400 home runs:
15.7 Adam Dunn*
17.1 Dave Kingman
29.9 Paul Konerko
38.5 Juan Gonzalez
40.0 David Ortiz *
42.3 Jose Canseco **
44.2 Carlos Delgado
51.8 Jason Giambi *
52.6 Fred McGriff
57.3 Willie Stargell ***
