If I had a million dollars ...

So Bret Saberhagen, one of my heroes back when the Royals were usually competitive, is selling a bunch of his trophies and stuff. Per The Kansas City Star:

The auction, conducted at SCPAuctions.com, concludes Saturday and includes 77 items, including Saberhagen’s 1985 World Series MVP trophy, his World Series ring, his Gold Glove Award and his Cy Young Awards.

There also are items from other players: a game-used autographed David Cone Royals jersey, a Cal Ripken Jr. signed batting helmet and signed jerseys from Bo Jackson, Ozzie Smith and Mo Vaughn.

And there are eclectic mementos like his high school basketball and baseball jerseys.

--snip--

Saberhagen said it wasn’t difficult to part with any of it, although he gave his four children a chance to take what they wanted.

A lot of people get sad when players sell their old stuff, but I don’t see any reason to be sad unless the player’s selling his stuff just so he can afford to eat or something. If he’s just selling it because it’s sitting around in a closet or whatever and he doesn’t care about it, then why be sad?

It does strike me as a little strange that none of his kids wanted the World Series ring. But Saberhagen is reportedly giving the proceeds from the auction “his charitable foundation and his four children.” I might rather have the ring, or one of those Cy Young Awards, than the cash. But then again, it’s just stuff. I’ll bet the kids are keeping a few mementos, a framed Royals jersey or something. And they’ll always have Baseball-Reference.com.
