Nope, no sour grapes here

So anyway, the Star-Telegram's Drew Davison asked Derek Lowe if players look at advanced metrics and it turns out Lowe thinks sabermetrics cost him a few job offers last winter. Which is ... strange. You should read the whole thing and be nonplussed, just for fun. Anyway, here's his basic answer to the original question:

He took a breath and shook his head. “No.”

Lowe then gave an analogy: What do parents ask their children when they come home from a game?

“Did you win or did you lose? That’s it,” Lowe said. “Nobody asks, ‘What was your WHIP?‘ ‘Uh ... what was your WAR?’ It’s always, ‘Did you guys win?’ ”

“I’m a big believer in winners and losers. Guys that know how to win, and they’re not always the superstar players. There are guys that don’t perform well when push comes to shove, but those things don’t show up in statistical data.”

Since going 16-10 (winner), Lowe’s gone 19-28 (loser).

One great thing about Derek Lowe? You don’t need any advance metrics to tell that he’s been terrible. In this case, the wins and the losses and the ERA (5.18). Now, I would never describe Derek Lowe as a loser ... but if he’s being intellectually honest, he might.
