The essence of fandom

Rich Schultz

Sunday afternoon, the Miami Marlins entered their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with the worst record in the major leagues: 11-32. In just their second season in a taxpayer-funded baseball palace, designed to appease the whims of their mercurial owner, the club essentially gave up before the season.

And yet, the essence of being a true fan:

I saw that only because the Marlins retweeted it. But I'm glad I did. Marcell Ozuna hit a double off the wall to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead. And rather than merely scoff, I checked out the new guys. And you know what? Ozuna's done well this season! He's only 22!

Alas, most of the other new guys haven't fared so well. Every-day middle infielders Donovan Solano and Adeiny Hechavarria haven't been much good, and it's really too early to get excited about Derek Dietrich.

Those are essentially all of the new young guys. There are a lot of new old guys, but they’ve basically been terrible, which is how you go 11-32.

Oh, there's also Jose Fernandez. He is new, young, and highly loveable.

If you’re a real fan, you don’t need much.
