Mike Trout’s no Aaron Hill

Harry How

Yeah, you already heard that Mike Trout hit for the cycle Tuesday night (here’s the homer that sealed it). While this perhaps seemed inevitable, because he’s Mike Trout and everything, there’s nothing about cycles that are inevitable. Trout’s cycle was only the sixth in Angels history, and the Angels have been around for more than 50 years. What’s more, Trout is reportedly the youngest American Leaguer in history to accomplish the feat.*

* I say “reportedly” because before he was reportedly the youngest American Leaguer, he was reportedly the youngest player in any league since Mel Ott back in 1929, that wasn’t true, as Arky Vaughan in 1933 and Cesar Cedeño in 1972 were both slightly younger than Trout.

How psychotic are cycles?

Until Wednesday night, Mike Trout had never hit for the cycle at any point in his short-but-illustrious life. Last summer, Aaron Hill hit for the cycle twice in two weeks.
