As I mentioned elsewhere, my new favorite comedy duo -- you know, since Martin & Lewis broke up -- is Angel Hernandez and Hawk Harrelson. When those two crazy kids get together, you never know what might happen!
Angel Hernandez blows one and Hawk Harrelson loses it
For example, Friday night. Bottom of the 10th, White Sox and Marlins tied up 3-3, White Sox have the bases juiced with just one out. All they need is something; Marlins need a strikeout or (even better!) a double play. And they’re playing at double-play depth.
Alex Rios slaps a grounder to shortstop, not particularly crisp, and it might be a double play ... but we’ll let Hawk and broadcast partner Steve Stone take over ...
Hawk: Can’t get him ... OH NO. NO.
Steve: -- He was safe at first---
Hawk: NO. NO.
Steve: Well Angel Hernandez blew the call and the infield being back should have cost them the game. It didn’t.
Hawk: He is SAFE, and ANOTHER BLOWN CALL BY HERNANDEZ.
Here, you may see (and listen!) for yourself. Hernandez obviously did blow the call. I’ve seen worse, but the umpires do get this one right, the great majority of the time. Maybe Hernandez is just having a bad season, or maybe he really does miss more calls on the bases than most umpires. If there’s any data on such things, I haven’t seen it. Seems like something Baseball Info Solutions should be tracking, though.*
* hint
If there was any good news for Hernandez, it’s that the White Sox did finally win in the 11th inning.
