Yes, Dewayne Wise is still playing

Tom Szczerbowski

This afternoon in Kansas City, Dewayne Wise led off the top of the sixth inning with a base hit.

This was notable for a couple of reasons.

One, it was the White Sox' first hit off James Shields.

Two, it was a reminder that Dewayne Wise is still playing in the major leagues.

Those reminders always surprise me, although until today I was never sure exactly why.

Now I know. Wise entered today’s game with a .264 career on-base percentage. Among outfielders with at least 1,000 plate appearances in the majors, Wise’s .264 career on-base percentage is the lowest. Like, ever.

Here are the three lowest of all time:

.264 Dewayne Wise
.265 Ivan Murrell
.269 Ken Williams

It’s probably a complete coincidence that Kenny Williams signs Dewayne Wise’s paychecks.
